Chapter 6: Courtney's iPhone

Nobody answered.

I walked to the edge of the stage where the AV kid sat behind his laptop.

He was a junior, and he'd been running the slideshow all night.

"Can you put my screen up?"

He looked at Courtney.

Then he looked at me.

He held out a cable.

I plugged my phone in.

The slideshow of senior baby pictures vanished.

The screenshot filled the big screen above the stage, three feet tall.

State Admissions Portal. Recent sign-ins.

June 30, 3:12 p.m. MacBook Air.

June 30, 11:41 p.m. Courtney's iPhone.

I let the gym read it.

It didn't take long.

"That's my account," I said. "On the night the portal closed."

"At eleven forty-one, somebody logged in from Courtney's phone and switched my first choice to Cedar."

I swiped.

The next screenshot showed my choice history.

Bradford University, changed 11:43 p.m. to Cedar County Community College.

Changed 11:59 p.m. to Defense Technology Institute.

"I found it at eleven fifty-nine," I said. "I had one minute."

A woman in the third row said, "Oh my God," out loud.

Courtney grabbed for the cable.

The AV kid held on to the laptop.

"That's fake," Courtney said. "Anybody can make a screenshot."

"You can log in and check yourself," I said. "I'll give the principal my password."

The principal was already walking toward the stage steps, her glasses pushed up on her head.

Courtney turned to her with wet eyes.

"Ma'am, I swear, I didn't do anything. I don't even know her password."

"Somebody did," she said.

Courtney spun toward Trent.

"Tell them."

Trent stood frozen in the middle of the stage with his Bradford letter still in his hand.

"Tell them!" Courtney said. "You borrowed my phone. You said you needed to check your swim times."
