Oren told it from the beginning, with his hands around the glass.
The bus stop and the debt.
Pip, and the braid, and those last minutes before midnight.
Egon at the dressing table with the photograph.
The ninety days.
Benedikt listened without a word, standing at the counter with his bandaged hand on the steel.
When Oren ran out of things to say he drank the rest of the water and set the glass down.
"That's all of it."
"No," Benedikt said. "Not all."
"What else is there?"
"Say the rest. What you felt when you saw me at the ball."
Oren stared at him.
Then he stood up so fast the chair went over.
"You knew," he said. "From the car. You knew I'd been sent, and you took me home and let me sleep under your roof with that thing in my pocket."
"I took it out of your pocket the first night."
"You took it, and then you fucked me."
Benedikt held his gaze.
"Yes."
"Three times." Oren's voice rose. "You fucked me in the kitchen. You let me stitch your hand. You held me through my heat and let me say I was yours, and the whole time you knew I was going to-"
