Chapter 22: The Bite
They burned the paper on the deck at noon, in a steel bowl, in front of the sea.
Ilse held the matches.
Pip held a bucket of water, because he was Pip.
Oren held the page between two fingers for a long time, reading his father's forged name one more time.
Then he set the corner against the flame and let it take.
It curled brown and black.
It went up in a thin white thread of smoke, and a sea wind took the smoke away.
"There," Ilse said quietly.
"That's all it was," said Oren.
"That's all it ever was."
Oren watched until nothing was left but ash.
He tipped the bowl over the rail.
The ash fell into the water and was gone.
He turned around.
Benedikt stood in the doorway of the deck in a gray sweater, pale from three weeks of hospital, with one hand against his side.
He did not come closer.
He had said he would not, not until he was asked.
Ilse took the bowl out of Oren's hands.
"Pip," she said. "Inside."
"But I want to-"
"Inside, Pip."
They went in.
The deck was quiet, with wind and gulls and the long white line of the surf.
Oren crossed to him.
