Chapter 7: Thank You
Sunny's POV
I found out about the truck from the man who bought it.
He drove down Harbor Road on Wednesday morning in Lasse's three-year-old Ford, slowed beside the smokehouse, and asked me for directions to the highway.
"Nice truck," I said.
"It was fourteen thousand," he said, pleased. "The man needed it fast."
I stood on the shoulder with a harbor ledger against my chest and watched him go.
Lasse had walked to work all week.
I had thought he was saving gas.
The smokehouse closed at nine that night, when the last customer carried his smoked chubs up the hill.
I knocked on the side door with the heel of my hand.
He opened it with a rag over his shoulder and ash on his forearms.
"Fjeld," he said.
"You sold your truck."
He leaned on the door frame.
"I did."
"For Torvald's note."
"For fourteen thousand dollars of it," he said. "The rest he'll call on the first. I'll find it."
"You didn't tell me."
"It wasn't your business."
"It was my tow order," I said, louder than I meant. "It was my dinner. You put your whole smokehouse on the table for a woman you've said forty words to since the funeral."
"Forty-one," he said.
I laughed, and then I stopped, because my eyes had started to burn.
He stepped back and let me into the smokehouse.
It was warm inside, and smelled of alder and brine.
Long racks of lake trout hung in the dark with the fires banked low underneath.
He pulled out a stool and I sat on it.
I put both hands flat on my knees.
