Chapter 17: Donal's Knee
"You can't let her do that," Donal said.
We were in the hotel elevator, going down, with the doors shut and the numbers counting.
"I can," I said. "Watch me."
"Nina, she's twenty-three."
"I know how old she is."
"I was twenty-two."
His jaw was tight, and he was looking at the floor numbers.
"Somebody who knew better stood on the sideline and let me go out on it."
"Nobody stood on the sideline. Dane taped you and shoved you."
"And you'll stand and watch her go out on his loading plan, which you know will fail."
He finally looked at me.
"The woman who stood up last night wouldn't."
The elevator opened on the lobby, and neither of us moved.
"The woman who stood up last night is done being the one who runs onto the track," I said.
"You don't get to spend my debts on your knee."
He flinched like I had hit him.
It was true, and we both knew it, and that made it worse.
"Okay," he said, quietly.
He didn't say another word to me the whole way home.
