Chapter 8: The Whiteboard

The Wright Valley women's track team lifted at 6:30 every morning, and I hadn't missed a session in three years.

On Friday I walked in at 6:34, in my old team hoodie, with a printout folded in my fist.

The rec center smelled like chalk and rubber.

Thirty women stood around the racks in warmups, and Kyla Draper sat on the bench by the mirror, one crutch against her knee, doing seated curls with a light band.

Dane was beside her on his phone.

He had one arm along the back of the bench.

Bea was at the far rack, loading plates, and our eyes met across the room.

She slid her phone out of her sports bra and propped it on a dumbbell.

The red dot was already lit.

"Morning," I said.

The room went quiet in rings.

"Nini!" Kyla's whole face lit. "You came. I was worried about you after the whole clinic thing. Is it a good day to talk?"

"Yes," I said. "It is."

I opened the printout and held it up.

It was slide three, enlarged on the library printer so the arrows were two inches thick.

"Kyla, did you take a picture of my whiteboard on Wednesday?"

"Of your what?"

"The one in Mr. Connolly's clinic. In blue marker, in front of you, while I explained your first phase."

She blinked at it, and her lower lip trembled with perfect timing.

"Oh, Nini. That. I took it for my notes. I wanted to remember what you said."
