Chapter 13: Say Nothing More
Dahlia looked at the table, and then at her own hands.
"I don't know his name," she said.
"Try again," Rhett said.
"I swear on my mother. He called me in Boise in the spring."
Someone near the front barked a laugh with no humor in it.
"He said there was a man in Coeur Pines who'd been looking for a girl for years," Dahlia said. "He said the girl was gone for good. He said I could have her life, if I learned it."
"Learned it how?" Mae asked from the stage.
"He sent me pages. The storm, the road, the cabin, the six days. I had them by heart in a month."
"He paid your bus," Rhett said.
"He paid everything. Cash in an envelope, left at a locker in the Boise depot."
"And his face?"
"I never saw it. I never heard him say it was him." She wiped her cheek with the heel of her hand. "I thought he was the kindest man alive. I thought he was giving me a second chance."
I watched her hands.
She had pressed her left palm to her right wrist while she talked, and I knew she thought she was holding herself steady.
It was the wrong wrist.
It had been the wrong wrist every time she touched a scar she said she'd gotten on Kettle Road, and I had been too busy being sick to count them.
"You took my place," I said.
My voice was small in that big room, and every head turned.
"You sat at my table and you ate my husband's food and you told him you were me."
"Rhona," Dahlia said. "I'm so sorry."
"You brought me coffee the morning of the party."
"I know."
"You fixed my zipper."
"I know, I know. I liked you. That's the worst of it."
