Chapter 29: The Porch Light Comes On
My father stood at the edge of the gravel with his cap in his hands, and nobody in the lot said a word to him.
He was sixty-one, and he looked eighty.
He didn't look at Rhett.
He looked at me, at the ring on my finger, and then at the carton of burned cards.
"Rhona," he said.
"Dad."
"I came to say something in front of them. I thought they should hear it."
"Then say it."
He turned, slowly, and faced the patch.
"I'm Rhona's father," he said. "My daughter married this man to pay what I owed him, and I let her."
His voice scraped.
"Wednesday a man came to my porch and said she was dead, and he gave me twenty thousand dollars. I counted it before I cried."
Someone in the back muttered, and Mae hushed him.
"I knew it was strange," my father said. "I knew there was no body, and no hospital, and no call. I didn't ask, because if she was dead, I never had to look at what I'd done to her."
He wiped his face with the back of his hand.
"When she knocked on my door, I turned the light off. I'm telling you all so you know what kind of man I am."
I stood very still.
I had imagined this for sixteen days.
I had imagined shouting, and I had imagined him crying, and I had imagined slamming a door of my own.
I hadn't imagined how small he would look.
"You turned off the porch light," I said. "I stood on that step for ten minutes and you watched me through the curtain."
"Yes."
"I saw the curtain move."
"Yes. I'm sorry."
"I don't forgive you," I said.
"I didn't come for that."
"I'm not done."
He nodded.
"You'll sit at the back of my wedding," I said. "You'll sit alone. You won't give me away, because nobody's giving me anywhere."
