Chapter 30: Hook on the Wall
We rode up Kettle Creek Road at dusk on a borrowed bike, with the deed folded in my jacket and my arms around him.
The track to the cabin was two ruts through the ferns.
Rhett stopped where the pines opened, and cut the engine, and neither of us got off.
The cabin sat low and gray under its tin roof, exactly as I remembered, with one window cracked and a porch swaying on rotten posts.
"Eight years," I said.
"I came here Thursday and sat on that step for an hour," Rhett said. "I didn't know if I had the right to come back."
"It's mine."
"It's yours."
"I'll let you in," I said.
I took his hand and led him up the step and pushed the door.
It stuck, as it always had, and I shouldered it open.
The room smelled of dust and old woodsmoke.
The cot still stood against the far wall under the window, where I had set his collarbone, and the hook by the door still held his old jacket, stiff with age.
He took it down.
He looked at it for a long moment and hung it back up.
"I'd like that to stay," he said.
"It's not going anywhere."
"Rhona."
"I know."
I lit the lantern on the table.
The light fell yellow on the beam where my grandmother had cut my name, and on his face.
"I never told you what I did the second night," I said.
"Tell me."
"You were asleep, and I sat on that floor and counted your breaths, because I was nineteen and sure you'd stop."
His eyes closed.
"I counted to four hundred and thirty," I said. "Then I fell asleep with my head on the mattress, and you put your hand in my hair without waking."
