Chapter 12: Receipts

On Monday morning Bartek took the elevator to the twenty-second floor of a building on LaSalle Street.

He carried an envelope with eight thousand dollars in it.

It was everything he had left of the thirty.

The rest had gone to the collections agency in November.

Zosia had given him a look when he told her, and then said nothing, which was worse.

The lawyer's office had a glass door and a receptionist with perfect nails.

"Mr. Wrobel," said the lawyer, rising from behind a long table. "You are early."

"I'm here to give it back."

"Give what back?"

"The money." Bartek put the envelope on the table. "There's eight thousand there. I'll bring the rest in installments. I'm out. I won't report on him, and I won't help you."

The lawyer looked at the envelope without touching it.

"It was a retainer," he said. "It is not a loan. A retainer does not go back in an envelope."

"Then I'll give you a receipt," Bartek said.

"I will not sign one," the lawyer said.

"Then I'll leave it on the table."

"Please do." The man smiled. "It will be an exhibit."

A voice behind Bartek said, "Oh, dear."

He turned.

Hedvig Ekeberg stood in the door of the next room in a gray cashmere dress, with her pearls and her silver bob.

She held her phone in both hands.

"I wondered whether you would come," she said. "I am so glad. We should speak, Mr. Wrobel, just you and I."
