Chapter 13: The Folder

The study on the second floor of the Astor Street house had a green leather desk, a wall of law books, and no photographs.

Ingmar took a key from his waistcoat and unlocked the bottom drawer.

He laid a gray folder on the blotter and stepped back.

"Open it," he said.

Bartek opened it.

The first page was a photograph.

It showed a café window on Division Street, a table, two men in winter coats, and an envelope sliding across the cloth.

One of the men was the lawyer.

The other one was Bartek, hunched over a cup of coffee with his fists on his knees.

The date stamp in the corner was three weeks before his first day.

A business card was paper-clipped to the corner of the print.

It read, in heavy black type, the name of the firm that was paid by Hedvig Ekeberg.

"That's me," Bartek said. His mouth had gone numb. "That's the day he found me."

"Yes."

"Who took this?"

"A man I pay to watch my aunt's lawyer. He sent it to me that evening." Ingmar's voice was perfectly even. "Underneath is your application. And your résumé. And the report on your father's account."

Bartek turned the pages.

There was his résumé, with a coffee ring on it.

There was a note on the application in Ingmar's hand, which he had seen on a hundred memos, in blue-black ink.
