Chapter 22: Dare Me Back
"Move in with me," Ingmar said, out loud, in the lamplight, with a spoon in his hand. "Please."
Bartek's mouth opened, and closed.
"Say it again," he said.
"Move in with me. Bring the boots. Bring the terrible coffee. Bring Zosia on Sundays." The pale eyes did not waver. "I would be very glad."
"Yes."
"Yes?"
"Yes, you idiot," Bartek said, and then he was across the bed and on top of the tray, and soup went everywhere.
They laughed until they were gasping.
It was Saturday morning, a little after five, and the kitchen was still dark when Bartek went down for a cloth.
He stood at the counter in his socks, mopping at his sweater, and heard Ingmar's step on the stairs.
He did not turn around.
The step stopped in the doorway.
Bartek put down the cloth.
He turned, slowly, and walked across the cold tile until he stood in front of Ingmar.
He was close enough to feel the heat of him, and he put one hand flat against the refrigerator beside Ingmar's head.
"Say no," Bartek said. "I dare you."
Ingmar's whole face changed.
He had been standing loose and tired in an old gray T-shirt and flannel trousers.
He went still all at once, and a slow pink color climbed his throat.
"You are quoting me," Ingmar said.
"I'm improving on it," Bartek said.
"I recall that you locked the door."
"There's no door to lock." Bartek looked up into the pale eyes. "So I'll just wait. Say no, and I'll go back to bed and make you breakfast. Say yes, and I'll do whatever I like."
"You have not said what you like."
"I haven't decided." His other hand slid up Ingmar's chest, and over the thin cotton, and flattened over the heart. "I might do it on the counter. I might do it in the shower. I might do all of it before noon."
