My Billionaire Brother Destroyed My Cheating Ex Husband novel · Chapter 11 of 24

Chapter 11: Forty Thousand a Month

I sat on Chad's study floor and read my brother's cards one by one.

The second Christmas said he'd bought a house with a room for me if I ever wanted it.

The third birthday said he'd watched a concert on television and thought of how I used to hum along.

I read them in order, with my back against the desk and Elias sitting on the rug beside me.

The one from the spring three years ago was shorter than the rest.

"Shelly. I heard about Mom from a nurse I had to bribe. I came to the church. Chad met me on the steps and said you didn't want me there. I believed him, God help me. I stood outside for an hour in case you came out. Say the word and I'll walk through any door you name. C."

I read it twice, and then my face crumpled.

Elias put his arm around me, and I let him, and nobody mentioned the rule.

Over my head, he typed one line to Alasdair with his free hand: "She found them. Come to the house."

"Alasdair was there," I said into his shoulder. "He was across the street the whole time."

"I know."

"I looked at those doors."

"I know. I saw you."

I cried for a long time.

I heard the front door open downstairs, and then quick footsteps taking the stairs two at a time.

Elias was on his feet before I had lifted my head.

"It's me," Alasdair said from the doorway, out of breath. "I came as fast as I could."

He stopped on the threshold.

My brother stood there in a gray suit with his tie loose, looking at me on the floor with a box of his own handwriting in my lap.

"Shelly," he said.

I got up.

I had a speech, and I'd practiced it for six years in the shower, in the car and at three in the morning.
