Chapter 14: The Lobby
The lobby of Holloway Freight rose four floors, and by eleven that morning half the building was standing on its balconies.
Nobody had called them down.
Alasdair had only told the front desk that Chad Lyle was coming and was not to be stopped.
I stood at my brother's left shoulder in a gray dress, with my hands folded in front of me so they wouldn't shake.
Elias waited by the elevators with his back to the wall, and every time I looked his way he was already looking at me.
Chad came through the revolving door at ten past eleven.
He wore a navy suit and a good tie, and he had cut himself shaving, one small dark nick on his jaw.
He had come without the project manager, and nobody was holding a phone.
He stopped when he saw the balconies.
"Alasdair," he said, in the reasonable voice. "Can we go upstairs? Privately. This is family."
"Say it here," Alasdair said.
Chad looked at the faces above him and at the receptionist, who had stopped typing.
Then he came across the marble toward us, and his hands opened.
"I made mistakes," he said. "I'll say it plainly. The company was in trouble three years ago, and your money was sitting there, and I borrowed from it."
"You borrowed seventy-two times," Alasdair said.
"I was going to pay every dollar back, with interest. Mar knows I'd never hurt her."
"You told me the bank was your department," I said.
"I was protecting you from stress."
