Chapter 21: Every Lender in the Room

Alasdair's POV

I had planned for most things that night, and I had not planned for Poppy Dunning to do my sister's work for her.

She stood on the stage with the microphone and told three hundred people what Chad had asked her to do.

"He wrote the clinic's name on the paper himself," she said. "He said Rochelle would fold if she thought I was carrying a baby. He said it would be over by Christmas."

"Poppy," Chad said. "You're hysterical."

"I'm very calm." She didn't look at him. "He booked two seats to Lisbon for Sunday, one way. I asked who the second was for, and he said me."

She held up her phone with the confirmation on it.

"It says Arlene Lyle."

Arlene made a thin, high sound and sat down on the stage steps.

I stood up from the middle table, and I didn't hurry.

I had watched my sister climb three steps in a green dress and take a microphone out of that man's hand.

I had waited six years to see something like it.

I walked to the first table.

Four men in dark suits sat there with their dinner untouched, and the woman from the bank kept her folder shut under both hands.

"Gentlemen," I said. "Madam. May I?"

I took the empty chair.

"Mr. Holloway," the eldest said. "We were told you were a partner in this venture."

"By whom?"

"By Mr. Lyle. His investor deck lists Holloway Freight as a backer. We extended the financing on that basis."

He pushed a bound copy across the tablecloth, and I turned it to the third page.

There was my company's name, and my company's logo, which I had never licensed to anyone.
