Chapter 8: The Robe

"My mother's rosary," I said. "It's in the nightstand. Move."

She didn't move.

"Brent," she called over my shoulder, sweetly. "She's here."

He came down the hall behind me with the glass still in his hand.

He saw her in the doorway and stopped.

He had the decency to look at the floor.

"You told me she was gone," Haley said to him. "You said she wasn't coming back."

"She came for something," he said.

"She's always coming for something."

I stepped forward, and Haley finally stepped back.

I went to my side of the bed.

The sheets were rumpled on both sides.

I opened the drawer.

The rosary was there, coiled on top of my old reading glasses.

I closed my hand around it.

The wood was warm from the room.

"That's what you came for? Some beads?" Haley laughed. "I thought it'd be the jewelry, at least."

I turned around.

"Take off my robe."

"Excuse me?"

"My aunt made that. My initials are on it. Take it off."

She tightened the belt instead.

Then she put one hand flat on her stomach.

"I'd rather not stand around naked in front of you," she said. "Not in my condition."

The room went very quiet.

Brent's head came up.

"Haley."

"What? She's going to find out anyway." She smiled at me. "Eight weeks. We weren't going to tell anyone yet."

Brent looked like someone had hit him with a board.

He hadn't known.

Or he hadn't known she'd say it.
