Chapter 4: Unedited

I carried my phone down the back stairs with Lyla's face still playing on it.

Orin was already in the control room, a windowless closet of monitors behind the lobby. He did not look up.

"I saw it at six this morning," he said. "It's night vision from the Hole camera."

"Nobody outside this building has that clip."

"Exactly."

He tapped a keyboard and a list scrolled up: names, times, a login for every export.

"Eleven forty-two last night. The night attendant's account. He left early with a stomachache."

I stared at the line. "Somebody bought him."

"Somebody did." Orin rubbed the back of his neck. "He's on shift at noon. Stay and watch."

Orin stood in the middle of the lobby with his arms folded, and four employees stood behind him.

"Where did you get five hundred dollars last night?" he said.

The kid's humming died.

"My cousin paid me back."

"Your cousin doesn't have a ring light and four hundred thousand followers."

Orin held up a gray envelope. Inside were five crisp hundreds and a pastel gift card that read *With love, Glowkin*.

"Found it in your locker. Your login exported the clip, and your phone sent it to her number at eleven fifty."

The kid went the color of oatmeal.

"She said it was for her friend's safety. She said she was a doctor's daughter."
