Chapter 16: Trivia Night

Toby ran trivia night at a bar called the Tin Whistle, and on Saturday it was packed.

I walked in at eight with Biscuit on a leash and one of the clinic techs, because the clinic had insisted someone come with me.

She stood by the door with her arms crossed, ready to fight anyone.

Lorcan had texted me that afternoon: Eat something. I had read it more times than a text deserved.

Biscuit wore his SUPERVISOR bandanna.

A woman at the bar said, "Oh my God," and then, "Can I pet him?"

"He's working," I said. "But yes."

Toby was on the little stage at the back, holding a microphone and reading a question about the capital of Australia.

He saw me and stopped in the middle of the word Canberra.

The whole room turned to see what he was looking at.

"Hey," he said into the mic, and it came out in a squeal of feedback.

"Hey, Toby."

"We're, uh, going to take a short break."

Somebody booed.

He came down off the stage with his beard shaking and met me at the end of the bar.

He looked terrible, with red eyes and his sleeves rolled up unevenly.

"I've got it," he said. "I've got all of it."

"All of what?"

"Hang on."

He reached under the bar and brought out a bank envelope, thick and sealed, and a black phone in a cheap plastic case.

He put the envelope on the bar between us.

"Five thousand two hundred," he said. "That's every dollar I have. I already gave you the four Bree paid me. This is mine. I figured I owed you for the part where I laughed."
