Chapter 7: The Engagement Party

Dillon's sister sent me the invitation herself.

She texted on Thursday morning: "My brother is an idiot and I'm so sorry. Come to my engagement party tonight. Bring Biscuit. Please. I want you in the room."

I looked at that for a while.

Then I called the sales manager back, and we talked for twenty minutes, and when I hung up I had a folder with two more pages in it.

The party was in the back room of an Italian restaurant, with white lights on the ceiling and a banner that said CONGRATULATIONS in gold letters.

I walked in at seven in a green dress with Biscuit on his leash and the folder under my arm.

He wore his SUPERVISOR bandanna.

The room had about forty people in it.

I saw Dillon's mother in the corner, in her green cardigan again, put her hand to her mouth.

I saw Toby near the bar with a plate of meatballs, and he went the color of the tablecloth.

I saw Bree.

She was in a pale yellow dress next to the happy couple, holding a champagne flute, and her eyes found me before anyone else's.

Dillon was near the head table, talking to an uncle.

He turned and saw me, and his hand dropped.

His sister came across the room with her arms wide, hugged me hard, and whispered, "Say whatever you need."

Then she tapped her glass with a fork.

"Everyone, one second. My friend Vicky would like to say a few words."

The room went quiet in sections.

I walked to the front.

Dillon took a step toward me and Biscuit growled.

He had never growled at anyone in his life.

Dillon stopped.

"Thanks for having me," I said. "I'm not going to take long. I just want to read you a few lines, and then I'll go."

I opened the folder.
