Chapter 5: Blackout

The storm came in off the bay on Tuesday night, and by nine o'clock the whole waterfront had lost its power.

I was in my flat over the shed with a headlamp and a bowl of caldo verde, because my mother had left it on the stair.

The flat is two rooms and a bath above the ice room, with a window that looks at the harbor and a radiator that knocks.

My father's old boots still stand by the door.

I had been home for four days, and I had washed my sheets twice, because they still smelled of Tomás's apartment.

Someone knocked at the street door.

I knew who it was before I opened it.

The pull had been in my ribs since dusk, steady and hot, and it had been coming up the stairs for a full minute.

I opened the door a hand's width.

Duarte stood on the landing in a black rain jacket with the hood back.

He held a cream envelope in his left hand, the scarred one, and he did not step forward.

"I'm not coming in," he said. "I have a summons."

"A summons for what?" I said.

"The Harvest dinner. My grandmother's table, Saturday." He held out the envelope. "She asked that you come."

"Term three," I said. "I sit at no Alpha table."

"It's her table. Not mine. I'd have you sit anywhere in the room you like." A drop of rain ran down his jaw. "She has asked me to ask you. I'm asking."

I took the envelope.

The paper was thick, and my name was on it in an old woman's handwriting.

Thunder rolled over the water, and the lights in the stairwell, which had been flickering, went out completely.

I heard him stop breathing.

"You should go before it gets worse," I said.

"The bridge is closed." His voice was careful. "The hurricane barrier is down. I walked."

"From Fairhaven?" I said.

"I wasn't going to ring," he said.

I should have shut the door.
