Chapter 6: The Honolulu Gate

I stood up and left my coffee on the seat.

I could have gone to my own gate and boarded my flight and let them find out from a screen.

That was the plan I'd made in the kitchen.

But the way Daphne's pineapple shirt lay against Colson's chest made the plan feel too small.

I crossed the wide hallway and walked up to the Honolulu gate.

Eli saw me first.

His phone dipped, and the grin slid off his face.

"Sue?"

Everyone turned.

"Susanna!" Daphne said, and put a hand over her heart. "Oh my God, what are you doing here? Did something happen?"

She sounded delighted and worried at the same time.

It was a very good voice.

Colson let go of her shoulder.

"Babe," he said. "You're at the airport?"

"I'm flying out too," I said. "Different gate."

"Where to?"

"Seoul."

He laughed once, confused.

"Seoul, Korea? For what?"

"For a job. I took it this week."

Around us, a few passengers had stopped scrolling their phones.

A man in a golf shirt shifted his carry-on to get a better view.

I held up my phone and turned the screen to face them.

It was the group chat.

"Four people I trusted," I said. "Look at the last message."

Nobody said anything.

I read it out anyway, in Daphne's cheerful voice.

"'Don't forget to hide the post from Susanna when you upload it, tilde.'"
