Chapter 16: One Staged Kiss
By breakfast, Brandon's clip had fourteen million views.
It showed my mother in curlers with a skillet over her head, and a man in a good suit crying out from the hydrangeas.
The caption on Lena's channel said: *Please pray for Brandon. He only wanted peace.*
Peggy sat at the kitchen table with her coffee and read it twice.
"He has a bruise the size of a plate," she said. "I'd like it on the record that I'm not sorry."
"Mom, that clip is going to be everywhere."
"Let it. They'll see what a man looks like when he's lying on my flowers."
Maura came in from the porch with her phone to her ear and hung up.
"The invitation's gone," she said. "Lena's lawyer withdrew your special guest slot an hour ago. You're banned from the Wedding Special and the studio lot."
"Then I can't get on that stage."
"You can," Maura said. "But not through the front."
She laid the facts on the table one by one.
The Wedding Special ran live from a soundstage at Meridian Studios, with a screen sixty feet wide behind the stage.
Every guest list went through Brandon's office.
She knew the stage manager, the sound crew, and the freight door by the loading dock, which had never once been locked.
"I can plug the drive into the screen feed from the sound booth," she said. "I need an hour in the building and a man who can walk onstage."
"Then we need a way in."
"We need Lena to want you there." Maura looked at me. "She can't stand to be the one left behind. If she sees you happy with someone else, she'll pull you back into the room just to take it away from you."
