I sat very still in my father's chair until Tanguy's footsteps were gone down the corridor.

Then I stood up.

Erwan was at the door, looking at my face.

"What did he say?"

"He has Enora," I said.

Erwan's good hand closed on the door frame until the wood creaked.

"Where?"

"He didn't say," I said. "He wants my vote for heir, the day after tomorrow."

"And?"

"And the captain's silence," I said. "He didn't say that part. He didn't have to."

The captain of the Grey Company was in a cell under the palace.

I'd brought him down the river myself, in irons, so he could tell the council who had paid him.

If Tanguy was confirmed heir, nobody would ever ask the captain anything again.

"You can't give him the vote," Erwan said.

"I know."

"And you can't leave her," he said.

"I know that too," I said. "So we find her before the day after tomorrow."

Katell's boats were tied at the guild quay below the Fish Market, where every boat on the Aven tied when it came to Kerys.
