Chapter 26: The River Lord's Boats

The captain of the Grey Company lay on the floor of his cell with his own belt around his neck.

The jailer said he'd hanged himself from the window bars and the belt had slipped.

The window bars were seven feet up.

The captain's boots were clean.

"Who came down here tonight?" I asked the jailer.

"Nobody, my lord," he said. "On my mother's grave."

He had a new coat on.

I looked at it, and he looked at the floor, and I didn't ask him anything else.

There was nothing a jailer in a new coat would say in front of a council.

Out in the corridor, Erwan put his good hand on the back of my neck and held it there.

"That was your witness," he said.

"That was my witness," I said.

"Is there another?"

I stood in the corridor under the palace and made myself think in lines.

Three hundred men had come up the Aven from Aven Ford to Penhal.

They hadn't walked on water.

"Eleven barges," I said. "No colors. The oarsmen wore green."

Erwan understood before I'd finished.

"He's in Kerys," he said. "He came for the council. He's lending the prince the money to be king."
