Chapter 18: What I Should Have Said

Kirk's POV

Sasha came up the loft stairs at ten that night with her coat still buttoned and her face scrubbed raw.

"My mother came to see me," she said.

"Do you want to talk about it?"

"No." She looked at the brick wall. "I want to be somewhere nobody needs anything from me."

"Then you've got the right room."

She laughed, a little, and sat on the end of my bed to take off her boots.

I stood in the kitchen with my hands on the counter, and I said what I had been saving for three weeks.

"Sasha, I want to tell you something, and I want you to let me finish."

She looked up.

"At the review I sat there, and I've never said what it cost you."

"I know."

"Watching Rodney's hands was my reason. It isn't an excuse. You were standing in that room alone with a stack of your own work, and I had four people on my side of the table, and I said nothing."

"Kirk."

"I should have stood up. I should have said your name before anyone had to say it for you."

I came across the floor and got down on my good knee in front of her.

It seemed to be the only way I could say it straight.

"I'm sorry. I won't ever sit still for that again."

She put her hand on my face.

"I thought you valued the building," she said. "I thought I was the person who made your hotel happen, and that you'd go with whoever held the title."

"I thought you'd be back in that house by Sunday."

"Every Sunday?"

"Every one for fourteen months."

"I'm not going back." She said it quietly. "I'll go to a dinner there, if Dylan asks. I won't sleep there."
