Chapter 23: What Rodney Owed

Dad called the whole firm into the conference room on Monday morning, and he asked me to come.

I stood by the plotter, at the desk where he had once put me to do someone else's redlines.

He sat at the long table, but not at the head.

He had taken the chair halfway down the side, and the head of the table stood empty.

Forty people filled the room. Dylan sat at the far end with a legal pad. Mom sat beside Dad with her hands folded.

Janie wasn't there.

"I'll be short," Dad said. "I'm stepping down as president, effective today."

The staff stirred.

"My lawyers have papers. I'm transferring half of my shares to my son and my daughter, and the other half to the people in this room."

Nobody said a word.

"I'm also writing to every client, in my own name, to say that Beacon House, the hospital wing and the school district work were designed by Sasha. I'll put it on the letterhead if she'll let me."

He took off his glasses.

"And I'm paying back the fee we took on Beacon House. Kirk has the check. I wasn't entitled to a cent of it."

A young designer by the window began, awkwardly, to clap.

Someone shushed her.

"Don't," Dad said. "I haven't earned it."

Mom stood up.

She had written something on an index card, and her hand shook as she held it.
