Chapter 16: What She Knew
Regina did not run and she did not deny it.
She walked up the footpath past the staring parents and stopped in front of Colby.
"He's right," she said.
Her voice carried to the fence.
"I knew it was him that night. I wasn't drunk enough to mistake anyone. I told myself I'd tell Cedric before the wedding."
"Regina," Colby said, in the voice he used when he wanted something.
"I didn't tell him. I let him marry me. I let him raise our daughter, and I went abroad every few months to see my son, and I called that a business trip."
The father by the fence lowered his phone and then, after a moment, raised it again.
"I'm not saying this for you," Regina said to me.
"Then who for?"
"For them." She looked at the principal. "That boy is my son. He's not sick, and he never was. His father taught him to cough so he could keep me. I want that written down somewhere that counts."
The principal looked at her for a long time.
"Mrs. Marsden, I'm going to ask the school officer to walk this gentleman to his car."
The officer, a heavy man in a navy jacket, had come out of the doorway without a word.
He put a hand near Colby's elbow and did not touch it.
"Sir. You'll want to leave the property."
"I'm the boy's father."
"Then you'll want to leave it with your hands where I can see them."
Colby looked at Regina.
Then he looked at me, and I saw him look for the person who had always given way.
I stayed where I was.
