Chapter 15: What Kylie Had

Kylie slid the manila envelope across the diner table with two fingers.

It was four o'clock, and the back booth smelled of burnt coffee and fryer oil.

Maggie sat beside me with her arms crossed.

Kylie sat across from us in a baseball cap and sunglasses she had not taken off, and she kept looking at the door.

"Open it," she said.

I opened it.

Inside were six pages of bank statements, each stamped with the same heading in small gray capitals: WHITBY FAMILY TRUST, PORTER HOLLISTER, TRUSTEE.

Every quarter, a deposit came in from Hollister Group.

Every quarter, within a week, the same amount went out to a second account.

The second account had Porter's name on it and nobody else's.

"Those are the dividends on your shares," Kylie said. "The company pays them on the fifty-one percent. They were supposed to go to the beneficiary."

"The beneficiary is me."

"Yes."

I turned a page.

The last column was a running total, and the number at the bottom had eight digits.

Maggie leaned over, read it, and said a word that made the waitress look up.

"The Maybach," Kylie said, her voice flat. "The lake house in Michigan. The apartment on Astor he told you was a company lease. The ring he proposed with. All of it comes out of that second account."

I looked at the number again.

I had spent eight years saving for a down payment, and I had never once been able to afford one.

"Why do you have this?" I asked.

"Because he asked me to sign the last two transfers, and I read what I was signing." She pushed her sunglasses up and her eyes were red. "It's the only thing I've read in this job."

"Eight months," Maggie said. "You've been there eight months."
