Chapter 8: Eighty Families

Emmett read the second line out loud, slowly, in the quiet voice he used for numbers.

"Section four. The investor, Jessamine Odell, shall receive three paid days of leave each year, to be spent with June Hallam, for as long as the company exists."

I took the page back from him.

It was my name, and my dead father's money, and the three days.

"I asked him for it every year," I said. "I thought I was asking for a favor."

"He let you."

"He grinned at me." My throat closed. "Every year, for seven years. Same deal as always."

"Section five is your equity," Emmett said. "Eleven percent, in exchange for the hundred and eighty thousand."

"So the shares weren't a gift for my code."

"They were your money, Jessamine. They've always been your money."

The bar noise swelled and dropped.

I put the page in the box and shut the lid, and I sat looking at my own hands.

"I need to ask you something," I said. "And I want you to answer it straight."

"All right."

"On Thursday you sat in that lobby for forty minutes. You'd been there since before I got back. You watched the guard walk me to the elevator."

"Yes."

"You knew what was upstairs."

"The guard told me they'd called a meeting," Emmett said. "I guessed."

"You could have come up. You could have stopped it."

"I couldn't have."

"You could have said something. Anything." My voice shook. "You waited until I walked out with my shares in my hand, and then you gave me your card."
