Chapter 10: Four Years Old
I opened the spare room door and saw my husband on his knees beside a four-year-old boy.
The only light came from a small dinosaur lamp on the shelf.
The boy lay under the rocket quilt with his cheeks flushed and his dark curls stuck to his forehead.
Harrison was smoothing the quilt over his chest.
He had Harrison's straight dark eyebrows and Harrison's square chin.
I stood in the doorway in a hospital bracelet and bare feet, and I understood the room.
The little bed, the picture books, the sneakers by the closet.
The brass letters on the wall.
C.A.
Not Celia.
Caleb Huntington.
Harrison looked up, and every drop of color left his face.
"Thea."
"Don't wake him," I said.
My voice sounded far away.
"Come out," Harrison whispered. "Please. Let me explain."
"In the hall."
We went out and shut the door almost all the way.
Celia was nowhere in the hall.
The front door was closed, and through the window I saw a car idling at the curb with its lights off.
She had left them alone.
Harrison faced me with his hands open.
"He's mine," he said. "Thea, he's my son."
"I know."
"I found out on the ninth of August. Celia came to my office with a photograph. I did the test the same week."
"Fourteen weeks."
He flinched.
"You knew for fourteen weeks."
"She left me five years ago," he said. "We'd been apart for five months by then. She never told me she was pregnant. She says she wrote to me, and I never got a letter."
