Chapter 15: Harriet
Every head in the boardroom turned toward the end of the table.
Harriet did not look at Celia.
She planted her cane on the carpet and stood up, slowly, with one hand flat on the wood.
"Mother," Harrison said. "You don't have to."
"I do."
Her voice came out thick and slow.
It was a bad day, and by now I could hear them coming.
"Five years ago," Harriet said, "a girl wrote me a letter. She said she was carrying my son's child."
A director near me drew a breath.
"I told my housekeeper to take her calls. I did not answer her letter." She stopped and swallowed. "I sent a lawyer instead. I offered her four million dollars and a monthly sum, and I told her she would never speak to my son again."
"She admits it," Celia said, in a clear, shaking voice. "You all heard her."
"She took it," Harriet said, still not looking at her. "She took it before I had finished the sentence."
Celia's mouth opened.
Nobody spoke for her.
"I would like to say that I did it for Harrison," Harriet said. "I did it because I was afraid that..."
She stopped.
Her lips worked on the next word and did not find it.
Her left hand began to shake against the table, and she glared at it.
It was a terrible thing to watch.
I had sat across a counter from a hundred patients who lost a word in the middle of a sentence, and none of them had ever looked at me with that much fury at their own mouths.
Nobody in the room helped her.
