Chapter 15: The Blue Ribbon
The county fair opened on the second Saturday of the month, and by two o'clock the whole of Sweetgrass County was standing in the heat around the bake-off stage.
I had Daisy on my hip in her yellow boots.
The widow stood on my left with her arms folded.
The diner owner stood on my right, in her apron, with a pink bakery box under her arm.
"You're sure?" I asked her.
"Honey, I've been waiting two weeks."
Three judges sat at a long table with forks and paper napkins.
Lottie sat in the front row with Birdie in her lap, in a pale blue dress with her curls pinned.
She had set a lattice peach pie in front of the judges herself, with a tag that said L. Spears.
She had not looked at me once.
Jesse was at the back of the crowd with the foreman, and I had told him to stay there until I gave him a nod.
"Our winner," the head judge said into the microphone, "for the finest crust in Sweetgrass County, is Miss Lottie Spears."
The crowd clapped.
Some of them clapped slowly, because they had been at the diner that week and they were remembering.
Lottie walked up to the stage with Birdie on her hip and took the blue ribbon.
She took the microphone in both hands.
"Thank you," she said. "I'm so touched. I put my whole heart into this, and I put my family into it, too."
She smiled out over the crowd and found Jesse at the back.
"Because I have some news. After a long, hard year, the man I love has finally decided to stop hiding."
A murmur went through the grass.
Daisy looked up at me.
"Mama, why is the lady saying Daddy?"
"Hold on, baby."
The head judge cleared his throat.
"Miss Spears, that's a beautiful crust. What's the secret in your filling?"
