Chapter 16: Banquet
The team banquet was on Thursday night in the Dunmore ballroom, under a banner that said GO GREEN AND GOLD.
Jesse sat at the end of the captains' table in a borrowed tie, with Cal on one side and Hank on the other.
Nate sat across from him, and under the tablecloth his foot kept finding Jesse's.
The coach stood at the podium with a stack of cards.
Sixty people filled the room, swimmers in green jackets and their parents and half the athletic department.
Nobody had mentioned Pierce's name all evening, but his empty chair at the head of the table was louder than the band.
"Is he coming?" Cal whispered.
"The detective said they can't find him."
"Then why is the chair there?"
"The coach won't take it away," Jesse said. "She says she wants to do it in front of everyone."
"Do what?"
Before Jesse could answer, the ballroom doors swung open.
Pierce walked in.
He wore his green jacket zipped to the throat over a clean white shirt.
