Chapter 17: The Meet
The conference finals filled the Dunmore stands by one o'clock on Saturday.
Jesse sat in the third row above the finish wall, in a green Halbrook shirt Hank had lent him, with Cal pressed against his side.
Cal had not let go of his sleeve since they sat down.
"You can breathe," Jesse said.
"I am breathing."
"You're breathing like you're the one on the block."
"I'm responsible for this one," Cal said. "I told him to choose. If he gets cramps, it's on me."
"He won't get cramps."
"You can't know that."
"I can," Jesse said. "He drank two bottles of water and ate a banana at nine. He told me twice."
Cal laughed in spite of himself.
Across the pool, the swimmers in the final heat were walking out along the deck in caps and parkas.
Nate was fourth in line.
He wore the green and gold cap, and he did not look at the stands.
Jesse knew why. He was putting everything away so only the water was left.
