Chapter 14: From Over There

Lucius's POV

She let me come as far as the light pole.

It stood forty feet from her, and she lifted one hand without turning her head, and I stopped.

The wind took half of what I said, so I said it loud.

I had practiced it for eleven years in the dark and I had never once said it out loud.

"He called me at two minutes to midnight," I said. "Rémy. I was asleep, and my phone was on the nightstand, and I didn't hear it."

She did not move.

"He left a message. I woke at five after twelve because the wind took a shutter off. I heard it and I called him back and he didn't answer. I put my boots on."

"What did he say?"

"I have it," I said.

I took out my old phone, the one I'd kept charged in a drawer for eleven years.

I held it up.

"I'll play it if you want it."

"Later."

"All right," I said.

"Go on."

"I drove behind him. I didn't know the road he took, but there's only one from the dock. I came up the ramp and I saw the hazard lights on the far side, a mile out."

My voice was not steady.

I had not expected that.

"The rail was down. His truck was in the water with the headlights still burning under it. I went in off the shoulder in my boots."
