Chapter 20: Pilings
Saturday morning I found him under the dock.
The tide was out.
The pilings stood bare to the waterline in long wet rows, black with barnacles.
The mud smelled of salt and rot and morning.
Lucius was down there in waders, with a flashlight in his teeth, checking the cross-braces the storm had worked loose.
I came down the ladder in my bare feet.
He took the flashlight out of his mouth.
"It's nine o'clock," he said. "The first fryer shows up at ten."
"I know."
"You should be eating something."
"I can't sleep. I keep seeing it," I said.
"Seeing what?"
"Sixty faces."
He set the flashlight on a crossbeam, where it threw a long yellow light down the pilings.
He walked through the shallow water to me.
I was in a cotton shift and nothing else, and my hair was a mess, and I'd been awake since four.
I put my palm on his chest.
His waders were cold and slick.
"You said nobody on this dock knows," I said.
His mouth twitched.
"I said that in August."
"You said it very firmly."
