Chapter 32: Eight Candles
Nobody said anything.
My mother stopped with a donut halfway out of the bag.
Clara held the velvet box up a little higher, with flour sifting off it onto the floor.
"Is this yours?" she asked Matt.
"Technically," he said, "it's your mom's. Eventually."
"You hid it in the FLOUR?"
"Nobody uses rye." He put his hand over his eyes. "I checked. I asked your mother in July what she used rye for, and she said Christmas bread. I had a plan. It was a good plan."
"When?" I said.
He took his hand off his eyes and looked at me.
He was pink to the ears, and it was the most frightened I had ever seen him, including the night of the fever.
"March twelfth," he said. "At the party. In front of everybody. With a crown."
My mother sat down on the stairs and laughed until she had to wipe her eyes.
Clara looked at the box.
Then at Matt.
Then at me.
She walked over to the storeroom, put the box back in the rye bin, and shut the lid.
She came out and dusted her hands off on her pajamas.
"I didn't see anything," she said. "Mom didn't see anything. Grandma didn't see anything."
"I saw everything," my mother said.
Clara pointed at Matt.
"But I want to be there. Right next to it. And I get to say when."
"Deal," Matt said.
"Pinky."
He gave her his pinky.
Then he looked at me over her head.
I looked back at him for a long time.
"I didn't see anything," I said.
It was the hardest thing I did all winter.
On Friday, March 12, at four in the afternoon, the sign in my window said: CLOSED FOR A PRIVATE PARTY. EVERYONE IS INVITED.
The shop was so full the windows fogged.
The back table had been pushed to the middle and covered with a pink cloth.
