Chapter 24: One Phone Call

Malphas sat down on the edge of Opal's bed, very slowly.

"Mal," I said. "What does it mean?"

"A demon's true name has power over him," he said. "If it's read aloud in the hearth-tongue, by someone who can, in front of witnesses, he's bound by it. He goes where he's sent."

"Where would you send him?"

"Down," he said. "Where he came from. Where he can't eat anyone's years again."

"And the only copy is in Royce's safe."

"Yes."

"Which is in his penthouse. With him. On a forty-floor building with a guard."

"Yes."

Opal opened one eye.

"You two can plan upstairs," she said. "I'm sleeping."

We planned upstairs.

We planned for two weeks.

None of the plans were any good.

Lacey wanted to pose as a cleaner. Malphas wanted to walk through the wall, which he could do, and set off every alarm in the building, which he would.

"If I'm caught in his house, it's his word against a demon's," he said. "And the police don't take statements from demons."

Meanwhile the tenants' union got ready for the twenty-first.

The young mother from courtroom two made posters. The boy from 4D made signs with FREE on them for no reason.

Lacey's spreadsheet hit a hundred and sixty green boxes.

On the Thursday before the vote, at noon, I was reading a lease with a grandmother from the Eastside when the green door opened.
