Chapter 25: Solstice
I carried the broker's sticky note all weekend, folded up beside Mal's napkin.
On Monday, the twenty-first of December, I carried them both to City Hall.
The council chamber was on the third floor, under a dome painted with clouds.
By half past three, two hundred Greaves tenants had packed it.
The young mother from courtroom two sat on the aisle with her kids in church clothes.
Opal sat in the front row in her hat, between the night nurse and the broker.
Lacey sat behind me with her laptop open to the spreadsheet.
"A hundred and sixty-one green boxes," she said. "I printed it, in case the internet dies of shame."
Malphas sat beside me in his coat with the crooked button.
He'd held my hand since the parking lot.
It had been cold when he took it. It was warm now.
At four o'clock, the council president banged her gavel.
"Item one. The Vine Street redevelopment, known as Greaves Tower. The applicant may present."
Royce Greaves stood up from the front table.
He'd been forty-one in September. He looked seventy now, leaning on a cane.
His teeth were still perfect. He still smiled.
On the chair behind him sat a steel case with a combination lock.
A model of the tower stood beside him, forty floors of green glass.
He used the word blight half a dozen times. Lacey kept track.
"The Larkspur is run by a squatter and a girl out on bail for arson," he said, looking right at me. "Ask her what she does with a microphone."
