Chapter 5: White Roses
Malphas didn't move out of the doorway.
"You came into my study," he said.
"You came into my bag."
"Yes."
He didn't even try to deny it.
I waited for an excuse. None came.
"Why didn't you let me go?" I said again.
"Because I thought you were his."
"Whose?"
"Andras," he said. "A demon who eats years. He's wanted this house for a long time. A stranger walks into my hearth with a contract I never wrote, sealed in blood, and she can read my tongue. What would you think?"
"I'd think she answered an ad."
"I thought she was a knife," he said. "So I kept the knife where I could watch it."
"For fifteen days."
"For as long as it took to find out who held it."
I held up my folder.
"And this was part of the finding out?"
"I needed to know if anyone would come looking for you."
"Did you find out?"
He was quiet.
"Nobody would," he said.
"Thanks. I know."
I shoved the folder into my tote and pulled the strap over my shoulder.
My hands were shaking. I hated that.
"Do you know what it's like," I said, "to have strangers read about you? Every family I lived with got that folder before they got me. They knew what I did at six before they knew my middle name."
"What is your middle name?"
"Not the point, Mal."
He blinked at the short name. I kept going.
"You don't get to read me first. Nobody does anymore. You ask."
The towel slid off his neck.
He caught it and held it in both hands.
"I'm sorry," he said.
"Say it like a person."
"How does a person say it?"
