Chapter 19: The Baby Shower

I didn't say anything for a while.

I held the black phone against my ear and looked at the glass.

"She's lying," I said finally.

"I know she is."

"On Monday she told me she was at a party in Manhattan. She said it in front of a housekeeper, loud, so it would stick." I heard my own voice go flat and cold, like Papa's on the radio. "Now she swears she was at the land end of my pier."

"One of those is a lie."

"Both of them are." I put my hand back on the glass over his. "And she's going to tell me which, in front of people."

The guard called time.

Ettore didn't take his hand away until the guard said it twice.

The Varrone baby shower was the next afternoon.

The whole city knew about it.

Ornella had sent out cream cards with gold edges six weeks ago, before the audit, and she wasn't a woman who canceled anything.

It was held in the garden behind the house in Dyker Heights.

White tents, pink tablecloths, a cake shaped like a cradle.

Every family's wives came, because not coming would have been a statement.

The Bay Ridge boss's wife came with her daughters-in-law.

The old man from Howard Beach sent his daughter, who sat at the back with her purse on her knees and her face like a closed church.

I came through the side gate in Papa's pea coat with a gift under my arm.

Nobody stopped me.

Nobody expected anybody to try.

Angelina sat in a white wicker chair under the biggest tent, in a pink dress with a satin bow above her belly.

She was laughing at something one of the Bay Ridge daughters-in-law had said.

The laugh was too high.

Her hand was flat on her stomach, and the emerald flashed every time she moved.
