Chapter 5: Cigar Boxes

"That's him," I said.

Ettore looked up from his armchair.

He had a crossword on his knee and reading glasses on his crooked nose, and he took the glasses off.

"Who?"

"My passenger. Last October, two in the morning, with Cosimo." I pointed at the screen with a gauze-wrapped hand. "He stood at my stern for thirty minutes in a Yankees cap."

Ettore turned the sound up.

The agent was listing names.

Longshoremen, a union delegate, two men from a Long Island crew.

Ettore listened to the end without moving.

Then he turned it off.

"Bay Ridge lost a son last November," he said. "Picked up on a dock in Sunset Park with a truck full of somebody else's cigarettes. The old man always said somebody sold him."

"You think Cosimo did."

"I think a Don doesn't take a boat ride at two in the morning with a federal agent to talk about the Yankees." He folded the newspaper.

"But I think isn't proof. Your logbook says C.V. plus one. Cosimo will say he was showing a cousin the harbor."

"Then I need a picture."

"Of a night eight months ago?"

"Papa had a rule," I said.

He waited.

"A camera in every wheelhouse. Pointed at the stern, where people stand when they think nobody's listening." I sat on the arm of the couch.

"He said a launch captain sees everything and remembers nothing, and the camera remembers for her."

"Where are the cards?"

"In his cigar boxes. In my grandmother's hall closet." I looked at my hands. "I kept the rule after he died. First of every month, I pulled the card and put it in a box. I never looked at one."

"Why not?"

"Because I'd have had to look at the last ones he made."

Ettore didn't say he was sorry.

He just got up and made me a cup of tea I hadn't asked for.

It had too much sugar in it.

On Monday morning I called Assunta and asked for the boxes.

"Sunday," she said.

"Nonna, it's important."

"Everything's important. Sunday at two. You bring the husband, and I'll look at him properly with my glasses on."
