Chapter 12: Limoncello

I ran the last thirty feet through the ambulance bay with my navy dress hiked above my knees.

Two paramedics were bringing her in on a gurney, and I saw the black cardigan first.

"Resus One!" I called. "Move!"

The charge nurse looked at me and then at the gurney and then, God bless her, did not ask who I thought I was.

"Resus One," she said. "Go."

I got my hands on Agnese's wrist.

The pulse under my fingers was slow, far too slow, a lazy thread in a skin gone gray and damp.

"What do we have?" I asked.

"Eighty-year-old female, found unresponsive in her chair by her aide, history of type two diabetes. Sugar was one-forty at the scene. Pressure sixty over forty. Respiratory rate six."

Six.

I leaned over her face and lifted her eyelid with my thumb.

Her pupils were two pinpricks.

"It's not her sugar," I said.

The attending came through the curtain at a run.

He took in my dress and my scared face and the old woman under my hands.

"She works here," the charge nurse said, in a voice that closed the discussion.

The attending nodded once.

"Your call."

"Pinpoint pupils, slow breathing, slow pulse," I said. "Narcan. Four milligrams, intranasal, now. And get me an airway."

Somebody put the spray in my hand.

I tilted Agnese's head and pushed it up her nostril and pressed.
