Chapter 20: The Cold Room
At two in the morning Bai Jin went down to Warehouse C, as he had gone every night for three years.
This time he did not go alone.
Gong Ting walked beside him down the service stairs with one hand on the rail and his sling a white shape in the dark.
Neither of them had a lamp.
The hall was open at the bottom, the shutter up, the long racks standing bare under the emergency strip.
Newspaper lay drifted along the floor.
The whole building above them was awake and murmuring.
The speaker had called a meeting for dawn.
The doctor had a queue of nervous people at her door, who wanted to hear that eleven weeks was a lie.
Nobody had slept.
Bai Jin stood at the end of row one and looked at the clipboard in his hand.
It had three years of numbers on it.
"Forty-two pallets," he said.
"There are none."
"No," said Bai Jin.
"There never were."
"I know," said Bai Jin, and began to laugh. "I know, I know."
"I stand here every night and count them, and there's nothing here at all."
He tore the sheet off the board and held it up.
It was a small, ordinary piece of paper.
He tore it in half, and in half again, and let the pieces fall onto the newspaper.
