Chapter 7: Peaches

"The old pencil," said Tao Rui. "That's all Dai Kun ever called him."

It was seven in the morning and Bai Jin had not slept.

He stood in the storeroom doorway with the cold tea going cold in his hand.

"Describe him."

"I never saw him. Dai Kun said the old pencil knows what's in C."

"He said the old pencil says they've got eleven weeks." The clerk rubbed his split lip. "That's all I know. I swear."

Eleven weeks.

Bai Jin put the cup down on a crate with great care.

"Thank you," he said. "The doctor will see to your lip."

He walked out onto the ramp and stood in the early sun, feeling that his feet were a long way off.

A pencil.

Luo kept one in his cardigan pocket, and half the compound wrote with the stubs the boy collected.

Gong Ting wore his behind his ear.

Bai Jin looked across the yard.

Gong Ting was lifting a crate onto the gate truck, shirt stuck to his back, the pencil in its place above his ear.

He saw Bai Jin looking and set the crate down and walked over.

"Boss."

"Sergeant," said Bai Jin.

"Raise."

Bai Jin made a sound that was not quite a laugh.

"What do you want now?"

"A tin of peaches," said Gong Ting.

"Peaches."

"Haven't eaten one since the Stop," said Gong Ting. "I noticed there were a few left on the third floor. Behind the flour."

Bai Jin stood very still.

There were fourteen tins behind the flour.
