Chapter 17: Blair's Last Card

Blair gave the reporter her whole face, wet-eyed and brave.

"She forged my marriage," she said, to the recorder. "I was engaged to Mr. Engdahl for months."

"She works engines and she works men, and my stepfather is paying for it with his life."

The reporter's pen moved.

Thirty-one people along the fence started breathing out through their noses.

I didn't argue.

I took my phone out and called the foreman, who was standing six feet from me.

His phone rang in his coverall pocket.

"Put it on speaker, please," I said.

He did, and held it up.

"Tell her what you saw on the thirteenth of October," I said. "In this lot."

"I saw her take Mr. Engdahl's text off Blair's phone," he said, loud and steady. "I saw that phone say HUSBAND."

"Thank you."

Blair's mouth thinned.

"They're employees," she told the reporter. "My stepfather signs their checks."

"He doesn't," said the foreman. "He bounced them."

I dialed again.

Greta picked up on the second ring, sounding smaller than she had on the stairs.

"Yes, darling?"

"Greta, I have a reporter and Blair in the yard."
