Chapter 16: Caerovan's POV: An Ordinary Parcel
Caerovan went to his aunt's sitting room before breakfast and knocked, which she took as an insult.
"You never knock," Odrienne said.
"I'm trying it."
She sat by the window with her embroidery frame and did not offer him a chair.
He did not ask for one.
He had practiced the next part in the mirror, and he found now that none of the mirror sentences began with a request.
"You will not speak for Ysmerelle again," he said.
That was an order.
He felt it leave his mouth and waited, with a distinct and ridiculous interest, to see whether he would shrink.
Nothing happened.
It was not her attention he was demanding.
It was her silence, which was a different thing, and he made a note to look into the difference.
"I would like to say it better," he said. "May I?"
His aunt's needle stopped.
"I would like you not to speak for her," he said.
"She doesn't want it, and I don't want it."
"If you do it again, I will say so in front of whoever is there."
"As you did at the ball," Odrienne said.
"Yes."
