Chapter 17: Only While Human
Ysmerelle had invited him to dinner in her own hand: Come on foot. Come as yourself. Bring nothing.
At sundown a quartet stopped in her lane and began to tune.
She went to the window.
Caerovan stood at the gate with a lantern, looking pleased with himself and slightly sick.
The cellist from the morning room gave her a small, apologetic bow.
She opened the front door.
"Nothing," she said, "means nothing."
"Orivelle said a gesture was called for," Caerovan said.
"Orivelle is not here, and I haven't had a quartet since I was nine."
"You are cross."
"I'm hungry," Ysmerelle said. "Tell them to play inside, or send them home with pie."
They went home with pie, all four, and the cellist took an extra slice for the walk.
Virelle had left a note on the kitchen table: At my sister's. Chicken pie in the oven. Do not let him near the kettle.
Caerovan read it over her shoulder.
"Am I the kettle's enemy?"
"You're its history."
