Chapter 20: The House Lost Its Right
Nobody in the great hall made a sound, and Ysmerelle could feel the dragon on her shoulder gather himself.
"Here is what it means," Caerovan said.
"No one of the house of Lysseroth will bar any adult from any gathering or any door in this house's name."
"Not me. Not my sister. Not my aunt."
His tail tightened on her necklace.
"Thalvian Merovain may go where he likes, including here."
"If a host wants a guest kept out, that host can say so in their own name and take what comes."
"You cannot," Odrienne said.
She came forward across the floor with her chin high.
"Doorkeepers," she said. "Remove Mr Merovain."
The two doorkeepers looked at her and then at the dragon.
"I'd ask you not to," Caerovan said. "But you work here, and you may decide for yourselves."
They considered it with the faces of men who had never been given a choice at this door before.
They both stepped back from their posts and sat down on the hall bench.
One of them loosened his collar.
