Chapter 5: A Portion His Size

Caerovan took his arm out of Odrienne's grasp before answering her guests.

"My fiancee didn't restore me by being obedient," he said.

Ysmerelle stood beside him with the bag still open.

She hadn't expected him to contradict his aunt in public.

Odrienne looked at the empty space above his sleeve.

"I meant she understood what was needed."

"She went where she wanted," he said.

"I stopped objecting."

A guest complimented Ysmerelle's gown to escape the conversation.

She thanked him and let her fiance answer the next question himself.

At luncheon the following day, Odrienne had arranged a special plate beside Caerovan's place.

It held a grape, a crumb of bread and a thimble.

He looked at it before taking his ordinary seat.

"In case," she said.

Orivelle moved the plate to her own side.

She ate the grape.

Her aunt replaced it from the bowl.

Orivelle ate that one too.

"He doesn't appear to need it yet," she said.

Ysmerelle spread her napkin over her lap and tried not to enjoy her companion's expression across the room.

Virelle had brought an invitation from a friend who lived near Ysmerelle's own small house.

There would be a garden party the following afternoon.

She wanted to see the house again before the guests arrived.

Caerovan was listening when she told Orivelle.

"I'll have the carriage ready after breakfast," he said.
